We’re all familiar with that “new carpet smell” that permeates a home when new carpeting is installed. Unfortunately, that smell may be accompanied by the release of volatile organic compounds. Normally, the high levels of these compounds emitted by carpeting drops off significantly a few days after installation. The potential hazards from carpeting are not well understood, but you can play it safe by leaving carpet to air out a few days before installation, or making sure the area where it is installed is well-ventilated for a while after installation.
